Dr. William Mathis, a colleague of Sid’s at the New England Society for the Study of Education, contributed in de-constructing various sections of the “Every Student Succeeds Act” (ESSA) which, after fourteen years, replaced the “No Child Left Behind Act.” The provisions of the law that were discussed were local control, testing, accountability, teacher education and certification and pre-K education. The 1,061 page law, which was given to legislators on November 30, 2015 and voted on December 3, 2015 left little time for thoughtful analysis on the part of our folks in Congress. There is much more to discuss about the law which we hope to do at a later date.
