NH Board of Education Chairman Tom Raffio was today’s guest on Inside Education. Since states who elected to have their students take the Smarter Balanced test have received and released the test results, Sid asked Tom Raffio why the New Hampshire Department of Education did not release the scores. Raffio said the department was preparing supporting information on the tests so the general public will have a better understanding of the test scores and what they mean. The voluntary nature of the Common Core Standards was also discussed and where Sid believes adoption was an exercise in “blind acceptance,” Raffio disagrees with that analysis. Near the end of the show Sid brought up the question of poverty and its influence on the education of children who live in dire economic and health conditions. This is a conversation that will continue into future shows.
