Heidi Sampson, a member of the Maine State Board of Education was Sid’s guest today on “Inside Education.” Heidi described the legislation that is now pending before the state legislature regarding the future of the Common Core Standards. If the legislation is successful the Common Core Standards will be replaced by the Massachusetts standards. It seems evident that such legislation if passed will have the support of the governor. Heidi reported on the number and scope of parents who have opted their children out of taking the high-stakes Smarter Balanced test. The largest number of students opting out came from juniors at the high school level. Heidi also shared her concern for the quality of teachers coming out of education schools which brought about a discussion not only about the future of public education but the future of our country.
