Senior Fellow Sid Glassner

Host Sid Glassner covers how teaching and learning to read under Common Core Standards corrupts the nature of the Reading Act and, in the process, turns students away from developing any sense of enjoyment about genuine literary experiences. Common Core reading has eliminated the maturing process of self-selection of books, the recognition of individual learning styles and of children being intimately involved in evaluating their progress —— among a number of other critical skills that will be discussed in future programs.

Along with his guest, Susan Ohanian, Sid explored the fallacy and foolishness of readability formulas and how they distort the very nature of the reading act.  Sid introduced the first of his ten basic ideas that educators should recognize when teaching reading, which is “A READER IS ONE WHO READS NOT ONE WHO CAN.”  Further ideas will be introduced in future programs.
