Riley read an advertisement from the May, 1772 issue of the Portsmouth Gazette that gave us an idea of how prominent a role religion played during colonial times.
Although religion played a very large part in their lives, Colonial Christians were careful not open the doors to the same sort of theocracy they dreaded under English rule and King George.
