The Office of Manchester Mayor Ted Gatsas published a calendar of public appearances for the mayor since undergoing open heart surgery. While absent from City Hall, the mayor has continued to conduct city business from his home and has had no public appearances since entering Catholic Medical Center on April 7, 2014. He was released from the hospital on the following Sunday, April 11. He did surprise us with a call on Thursday, April 18 to let everyone know his recovery was progressing nicely and that he was progressing well. Having to unexpectedly deal with kidney stones did set the mayor’s return to City Hall back a bit.
The mayor’s absence wasn’t without controversy as Alderman at-Large Dan O’Neil sharply criticized the mayor and his staff in a blistering email sent before the mayor was released from the hospital, condemning what termed a failure to keep the Board of Aldermen informed as to his condition and ability to execute the duties of the office. O’Neil said the mayor wasn’t acting in the best interest of the city or its citizens and said both deserved better. O’Neil did admit, however, that the mayor called him after entering the hospital to advise he was undergoing further tests and that may not have been able to communicate with him or the board before undergoing bypass surgery. He also said he had not contacted the office to inquire as to the mayor’s condition or status prior to complaining about lack of communication. Both Gatsas and his office declined comment on O’Neil statements, except to say the mayor was engaged and performing necessary city duties while recovering from the surgery.
We’re pleased to know his appearance on this show is included on schedule released by his office.
