(Hour 1b) Superintendent Dr. Debra Livingston is “coming down hard” on Common Core according to at least one Manchester teacher. The constant shifting of standards are really problematic. Former Superintendant Dr. Tom Brennan shared that sentiment with us, too. Are the majority of our teachers on board with Common Core?
Haven’t these people told us this is JUST about a set of VOLUNTARY standards? THey contradict themselves!!
I’ve started compiling a collection of strong criticisms of Common Core on this site: http://commoncorecriticisms.wikispaces.com/
I am a public school teacher in NH who is concerned about all those “potential impacts” you mentioned.
FYI, the CCSS [sic] have absolutely NO standards for middle school for the writing of poetry, and the ONLY reference to writing fiction is in passing, in regard to maintaining a logical chronology of a narrative text. This effectively GUTS the NH state standards, which placed equal emphasis on both fiction and non-fiction, and gave poetry its due.
By the way, this is most assuredly NOT a partisan issue. I am an unabashed liberal, and know many people in the middle and on the right who agree that the CC standards are more than merely concerning….
Thank you for sharing this on our site. I will help to publicize it.
You’re quite welcome–and I thank you for giving this important education issue due attention.
