Whether we agree or disagree with our legislators on a particular issue, Granite Staters expect our representatives and senators to be in Washington voting on our behalf. Or at the very least give a public explanation of why they had to miss a vote. In recent days, Sen. Jeanne Shaheen and Rep. Carol Shea-Porter have each missed an important vote and neglected to release a public explanation of why they were not present to vote on New Hampshire’s behalf.
On Monday, Senator Jeanne Shaheen did not cast a vote for cloture on an issue particularly important to “Sales Tax Free” New Hampshire, S.743, legislation commonly known as the “Internet Sales Tax.” You can view the roll call of that vote here: http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=113&session=1&vote=00107
On Thursday, Rep. Carol Shea-Porter did not vote on H.R. 624, the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (or CISPA). You can view the roll call of that vote here: http://www.govtrack.us/congress/votes/113-2013/h117
Derek Dufresne, Spokesman for Citizens for a Strong New Hampshire, released the following statement:
“Perhaps there is a legitimate reason, but it is the responsibility of Sen. Shaheen and Rep. Shea-Porter to give a public explanation to Granite Staters when they miss important votes. This is especially true with regards to the Internet Sales tax, which would have such a detrimental effect on our economy and the New Hampshire advantage.
“We encourage Sen. Shaheen and Rep. Shea-Porter, to give a public explanation to Granite Staters of why they were not present to vote on their behalf. New Hampshire residents deserve nothing less.
Citizens for a Strong New Hampshire encourages Granite Staters to call Sen. Shaheen at 603-647-7500 and Rep. Shea-Porter at 603-641-9536 and ask them why they each missed an important vote in recent days.
