I am a retired Clinical Social Worker who has always been interested in obtaining the best education possible for myself as well as others of all ages.
During the Korean War, I served as a Troop Information & Education Specialist in the Iron Triangle area. Upon my return I attended the University of Virginia where I graduated With Honors, and received admission to the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. I received my Graduate Degree in Social Work from Syracuse University.
Since its beginnings in New Hampshire, I belong to the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute where I both attend many classes as well as give classes.
I have been following the School Board Committee’s on-line meeting minutes, from the extended pizza fiasco of yesteryear, and then, to the time that the Board did not spend all its budget allocation and had to return the excess to City Hall. In the minutes of that meeting it showed Board members getting angry with the secretary for not informing them beforehand, so that they could SPEND YOUR TAX MONEY ON “SOMETHING,” rather than returning it to you. Today, they are in the midst of a current budget fight with City officials for more money.
Nowhere have I found the primary concern to be what will provide the best education for the children. Rather, the concern always appears to be HOW MUCH OF YOUR TAX MONEY they can get from the City to spend. The belief seems to be that the more money that is spent on “education,” the better the results. If this were true, Washington D.C. would have the best educated children in the country, instead of among the worst.
WITH YOUR VOTE, I will help to develop the NH STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION’S new “VISION FOR REDESIGN” in our schools. The aim is to bring our schools out of what has become an antiquated, 20th Century, industrial model which is adding to Manchester’s financial problems. Rather, by being AS FLEXIBLE AS POSSIBLE, and UTILIZING AVAILABLE COMMUNITY RESOURCES we can turn Manchester’s schools intoa 21st CENTURY LEARNING COMMUNITY.
I want to focus, first and foremost, on providing children with the best education possible by exploring any and all means of doing so. Only then, will I explore how this can be achieved in the least costly way.
