Yogi: Not the bear seen in Candia
First burglars, now bears! The Candia Police Department is warning residents on Chester Turnpike to take in their bird feeders and be aware of their surroundings at all times as bears have been reported in the area. Residents might also want to take their trash barrels into the garage and make sure to close the doors.
The city of Manchester sent out a bulletin yesterday advising it will not be picking up the trash today. As per usual, the city will attempt to collect today’s and tomorrow’s trash tomorrow, so you Friday folks, which is the entire West Side, be sure to put your barrels out per usual.
Gobble Gobble from Bedford PD
The Bedford Police Department released a Thanksgiving Day greeting and driving tips for the holiday yesterday saying, and I quote,
GOBBLE GOBBLE! Drive safe and smart. B P D cares! Give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination, designate a driver, don’t drink and drive, use care on the roadways when traveling and buckle up!

MFD: OD update
The Manchester Fire Department wanted to share some pre-holiday season good news with the public before its official start today. Emergency Medical Services Officer Christopher Hickey issued a statement saying quote
Since most of us are not in our respective offices for the rest of the week after today I wanted to give everyone some good news before traveling to wherever you are celebrating. We are on track right now to have our lowest overdose month since February of 2015 (which was caused by tremendous snowfall). For the first month where weather has not been a factor, we in Manchester have only responded to 34 suspected overdoses with 4 being fatal. I know I have said this before, but with the increased potency of opiates on the street and Fentanyl being the highest incidence of encounter and use, this is a tremendous accomplishment. Without the total community collaboration and effort, this would not be possible.
Hickey: Numbers moving in the right direction
Hickey provided stats showing that from May first to November twenty third of last year, there were four hundred fifty overdoses and fifty fatalities. From May first of this year to yesterday, November twenty third, there were four hundred twenty five overdoses and thirty four fatalities. He used May first as the start date to compare stats because the Safe Stations program was launched this year on May fourth. While twenty five fewer overdoses and sixteen fewer fatalities might not seem like a lot, Hickey wrote quote:
Everyone around us is seeing record breaking numbers on a month to month basis, but since the start of Safe Station and the reinforcement of Granite Hammer being a statewide model, things are actually going down. Will we end up being higher than 2015? Yes, but marginally. But for the numbers-oriented groups we are trending down. Finally.

This Saturday
The Derry Parks and Rec. Department wants people to know of several events coming this Saturday. The town’s annual Holiday Parade steps off at one o’clock on West Broadway, turning down Crystal Ave., and ending at Hood Commons! Parade info available at g d l chamber dot org. After the parade, a Very Derry Holiday Event takes place from two to five at Veterans Hall. Enjoy cookie decorating in the Gingerbread room as well as face painting by their local elves! During your visit make sure you stop by Santa’s Workshop to paint your very own wooden toy! We’ve got the links to more information on this fun holiday event. Another Very Derry Holiday Event runs from three to five at the Adams Memorial Opera House, where kids can visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus and let them know what you would like for Christmas! Everything is free of charge, except the photos with Santa which are only five bucks. Sounds like fun!
Auburn: Selectmen continue budget reviews
The Auburn Board of Selectmen will continue its budget reviews at a meeting on Monday, November twenty eighth. They’ll be taking a look at funding an audit, shift differential pay for the police department, road reconstruction, the town’s buildings rehabilitation capital reserve fund and accrued benefits expendable trust fund. Also on the agenda are proposed revisions to the policies for accepting roads and rates for contract labor, among other items We’ve linked to the agenda so you can take a look.
