Truck terror in Nice

Truck terror in Nice

At least eighty-four people were killed in the city of Nice, France by a terrorist driving a nineteen ton truck into a crowd gathered to celebrate Bastille Day.  Nearly two hundred more were injured in the attack, eighteen of them critically.  News reports say the truck was “loaded with grenades and other arms.”

Authorities said they found identity papers belonging to thirty one year-old Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel from Tunisia.  He was known to police.  He was shot and killed by police as he fired on the fleeing crowds.  The carnage was gruesome, with people’s bodies dismembered by the truck as it careened through the crowd.

Hollande: France is strong

Hollande:  France is strong

Saying quote “The terrorist nature of this attack cannot be denied,” French President Francois Hollande extended, for three months, the state of emergency that has been in place since the Paris attacks and mobilized reservists.  He said were uncertain whether or not the attacker had any accomplices.

Said the Hollande, quote:

France is horrified by what has just occurred; a monstrous act of using a truck to intentionally kill dozens of people celebrating 14th of July.  France is strong.  France will always be stronger than the fanatics who want to strike France today.

The current occupant of the White House released a statement condemning quote “what appears to be a horrific terrorist attack” saying the thoughts and prayers of the American people are with the families and other loved ones of those killed, and wished a full recovery for the many wounded.

Trump: When will we learn?

G O P presidential candidate Donald J. Trump responded with a series of tweets saying quote

“Another horrific attack…When will we learn? It is only getting worse” and quote “My prayers and condolences to the victims and families of the terrible tragedy in Nice, France. We are with you in every way!”

In another tweet, Trump said he postponed his scheduled news conference called to make his vice presidential announcement.

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said it appeared as if “another American ally” had been attacked by terrorists, offering thoughts, prayers and solidarity with the people of France.

Bridge St Ext water main break

Bye bye Bridge St. Ext.!

A twenty four inch water main ruptured yesterday under the Bridge St. Extension between Mission Ave. and Christy Lane in Manchester.  In a Facebook post yesterday, the Manchester Water Works asked people to conserve water as much as possible while they made repairs.

The water main on Bridge St. Extension was shut off between Candia Road and Newstead Way as were water mains on Drew Ave., Morse Rd., Dwight St., Windsor Ave., Effel Ave., Christy Lane and Hobb Way.  Bridge St. Extension was closed to traffic between Mission Ave. and Beaver St. and traffic was detoured.  The main was repaired by four o’clock, though road crews continued to repair the road as the night wore on.
