Reagan approves SB 515
State Senator John Reagan, Republican from Deerfield, expressed his approval of S B 5 1 5 after it was signed into law on Tuesday. The bill modifies the child protection act slightly to expand the authority of the Division of Children, Youth and Families to take into account a parent’s use of non-prescription opioids in abuse or neglect cases while maintaining parental rights and the family structure. Senator Reagan said, “In the middle of this heroin and opioid crisis, the need to find better ways to manage difficult situations like these has only grown.” The bill also allows the court to order periodic alcohol and drug testing with the understanding that the parent may be responsible for the cost of the tests.
New Hampshire’s Attorney General Joseph Foster released a consumer alert yesterday to state residents regarding an unregistered nonprofit and their defunct raffle. The nonprofit organization, named Smile God Loves U Foundation, recently sold raffle tickets to benefit a substance abuse treatment center; however, they are not a registered charity with the Attorney General’s office and they did not obtain a raffle permit. The raffle tickets were sold for fifty dollars each with the chance to win two snowmobiles with a trailer or twelve thousand five hundred dollars in cash. The winning ticket was supposed to be drawn on January 30th, but the drawing did not take place. When ticket buyers called Smile God Loves U, they were told that they had not sold enough tickets to award the prizes. Also, the substance abuse center has not received any funds from the raffle. The Attorney General suggests that those who bought raffle tickets should contact Smile God Loves U to seek a refund and cautions others may also contact the Charitable Trusts Unit at 2 7 1- 3 5 9 1.
Manchester Police: Sobriety Checkpoint and Protests
The Manchester Police Department released the results of their most recent sobriety checkpoint. They stopped one hundred and twenty eight cars, issued fifteen warnings, and did not find anyone operating under the influence of liquor or O U I L. The checkpoint may have been affected by the large group of protesters around that warned drivers of them and steered them away. The police department is required by state law to release the dates of a sobriety checkpoint, but they do not have to release the location. The protesters likely just walked around the city that day until they found the checkpoint and then steered traffic away from it.
Jonathan Felch
A Manchester man by the name of Jonathan Felch received an O U I L Operating Under the influence of liquor on Tuesday night. Felch was driving a 2014 Ford Explorer with his six year old son when he hit a parked Chevy Impala on Lincoln Street. No one was hurt in the crash, but Felch parked his vehicle on Silver Street and walked away from it with his son. Officer Matthew McDonald found them and determined Felch was not only under the influence of alcohol but that he was a habitual offender and should not have been operating the vehicle. Felch’s son
The Bedford Historical Society is holding their annual antique and classic car, truck and motorcycle show at 1 39 New Boston Road on Saturday from ten to two. Due to the heavy amount of traffic that is expected, the Bedford Police Department urges residents to use caution when approaching the intersection of New Boston Road and McAllister Road. The Police Department also asks that drivers slow down and leave themselves plenty of time if in the area during the show.
The Manchester School Board is still seeking input from the public concerning the hiring of a new superintendent. H Y A Associates, the firm hired by the school board to conduct the search is hosting its last of three open forums tonight in the district’s headquarters at 195 McGregor Street at six thirty. The meetings are in addition to focus groups that will be held with parent groups, employee unions, public safety, health officials and businesses.
