Nope, most banks don’t steal deposits.
The federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau took action against Citizens Bank on Wednesday for failing to credit the full amounts of their customers’ deposits. Regulators ordered the bank to refund eleven million dollars to depositors and pay a seven point five million dollar fine. Quote “Citizens Bank regularly denied customers the full credits of their deposits when there were discrepancies between deposit slips and the actual money transferred into the bank,” said C F P B Director Richard Cordray. “The bank chose to ignore these discrepancies and harmed many consumers by pocketing the difference.” Citizens was found to have shorted its customers of millions of dollars from January first two thousand eight until November thirtieth two thousand thirteen.
Infantine: Looking to spank the bank.
In reaction to this story, State Representative Will Infantine, Republican from Manchester and Chairman of the House Labor Committee, issued a statement saying quote
“I consider this stealing. I have contacted the NH Banking Commission and asked what if any action they plan on bringing against the bank. They said they would have to get back to me. Seriously, what would you think would happen if this type of thing went on with any other business in NH?”
In closing, Infantine asked his fellow legislators to also call the N H Banking Commission and demanding action be taken against Citizens Bank. Quote “We can’t allow this action to go unpunished,” he said.
GPD: Issues burglary warning.
The Goffstown Police Department is asking residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity in their neighborhoods immediately. The department said there has been an influx of residential burglaries and thefts from motor vehicles in the last few weeks. Since July first, the department says it’s investigated thirteen burglaries, several thefts from motor vehicles and one stolen vehicle. According to the G P D, the burglaries have been happening in all areas of the town in close proximity to the main roads. While they have largely been residential, there have been three business burglaries in recent days. Vehicle break-ins have been concentrated in the area of East Dunbarton Rd. In all of the cases, cash and jewelry have been taken. The cops say they’ve stepped up their patrols in town, especially in the targeted areas and are asking anyone with information on the crimes or who observe any suspicious behavior to call them at 4 9 7 4 8 5 8.

Sununu: Offers help, hammers Hassan
District Three Executive Councilor Christopher Sununu has sent a letter to Health and Human Services Commissioner Nicholas Toumpas offering his help to find health care facilities that will accept the funds denied Planned Parenthood for the provision of women’s health services. Sununu voted against a one point one million dollar state contract with Planned Parenthood after videos surfaced exposing the organization’s dealings in the sale of organs and body parts from aborted children.
Sununu restated his concern that for all of the medical facilities in his district, there were very few that accessed the state’s funds to provide the services they support. He said Planned Parenthood had quote “managed to discourage other qualified health care providers from bidding on this contract.”
Hassan: More options not helpful to women
In the letter, he also wrote quote
“New Hampshire women should not be forced to seek important health services from an organization that is immersed in scandal and currently being investigated by Congress. They deserve more choices and greater access to health care.”
He chided Governor Margaret Wood Hassan for her refusal to seek alternative providers for women’s health care, saying he was astonished by the governor saying “more choices for women in health care would not be of help.” We’ve uploaded the letter with this newscast at Girard at Large dot com.
From bell to bell: Code for “Work to Rule?”
“Utterly disappointed.” That’s how the Manchester Education Association said it felt about Mayor Ted Gatsas’ veto of their contract in a statement issued late last night. The union condemned the mayor’s quote “blatant disregard of the unanimous support of the Board of School Committee” and said his veto of the teachers’ contract undermined quote “the educational foundation of all children and families in Manchester.” They claimed the school board and the superintendent’s office quote “clearly stated that the fiscal responsibility of the contract was manageable.”
Addressing a potential job action, the statement read quote
“While there are rumors about what the teachers will or will not do, let’s be clear: we will be professionals and we will educate our students from entry bell to exit bell. On September 2nd we will be at our posts, ready for our students.” They also said quote “It is imperative that we all dedicate ourselves to improving the public understanding of the challenges facing Manchester’s children and we should demand that this be a priority for the city’s leaders.”

What students need: Teachers with higher salaries?
“What do the Manchester schools need? What do our students deserve? What our schools need and our students deserve are passionate educators who will come to Manchester and stay. Students deserve teachers who are not demoralized and feel disconnected, but are understood to be professionals who have pride in their work. They are a key piece to building Manchester’s schools and the city’s future. Ultimately, the answers to these questions will come from the citizens at the polls.”
