The first two days of campaign filings this week have come and gone with little fanfare or notice, especially by candidates.
Yesterday, former Ward 4 School Committeeman and former mayoral candidate Christopher Herbert filed his candidacy for alderman. Herbert, a longtime member of the Board of School Committee, vacated the seat to challenge Mayor Ted Gatsas in 2011. Largely abandoned by the Democratic Party, to which he is a convert, he was beaten by a three to one margin. Incumbent Ward 4 Alderman Jim Roy has yet to file his candidacy, but is expected to do so by the end of the week.
In Ward 5, incumbent Alderman Tony Sapienza filed for reelection today. Sapienza was elected in the May special election to succeed the late, long term incumbent Ed Osborne. He handily defeated incumbent School Committeeman and odds on favorite Ted Rokas in the election by a three to one margin. Where Sapienza campaigned actively in the Ward, Rokas did not. Rokas has yet to file any candidacy for the current election cycle.
A few ward offices also saw new candidates file over the past couple of days. However, several offices remain without any candidates and the vast majority of offices filed for are, as of yet, uncontested.
