Open Doors Trolley Night July 23, 2015 in Manchester
MANCHESTER, NH – Join us for the second Open Doors Arts and Cultural Tour of 2015 on Thursday, July 23, 2015. These popular (and free) Trolley Nights, a community endeavor of the Majestic Theater, are organized each year to celebrate the amazing diversity of artistic expression and dynamic museum experiences that the city has to offer. Two trolleys will circulate the same route between the hours of 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., stopping at each venue about every 30 minutes. The trolleys start at Langer Place at 5:00 p.m., but you can hop on at any venue. Free parking is available at 55 S. Commercial Street and at 200 Bedford Street.
Come and support Manchester’s wonderful arts and cultural community! There’s always something new and surprising to see and enjoy for people of all ages. Here’s what’s happening at each of the venues this time around:
Langer Place (55 South Commercial Street): At Langer Place, visit the studio of Althea Haropulos. It’s Been a Hell of a Year! Is an Art Exhibit of photographs by Leonard Brisson and Althea Haropulos and paintings by Susan Brisson. The Brisson’s youngest son, Isaac, was diagnosed with a form of Leukemia in the fall of last year that would require a 5 month stay at Children’s Hospital in Boston. Challenged by a photographer friend, Len photographed Isaac as he bravely faced his many stages of intense chemotherapy. Susan has been playing with color in her abstract painting for years. While she was with Isaac in the hospital, Susan had time to learn techniques that have changed her Art. Althea’s year was characterized by the highest highs and lowest lows in both her personal and professional life. In preparing for this exhibit, she was surprised at how much personal work she had generated during this tumultuous time. Althea, Len and Susan have been friends for over 25 years.
Millyard Museum (200 Bedford Street): Visit the Millyard Museum to view the permanent exhibit “Woven in Time” that covers local history from Paleo-Indians to the Segway. Also, view the special exhibit, New Hampshire Landscapes – Paintings from the Permanent Collection, which features ten landscape paintings depicting scenes of Manchester and other areas of New Hampshire, selected from the collections of the Manchester Historic Association. Among the locations represented are Lake Massabesic, the Uncanoonuc Mountains, Rock Rimmon, and the Presidential Range. Several paintings also depict some of Manchester’s historical buildings, including the P. C. Cheney Paper Mill, the Smyth Mansion, the City Farm, and the Amoskeag Train Station.
SEE Science Center (200 Bedford Street): The SEE Science Center features more than 80 hands-on exhibits for visitors of all ages. Many of these exhibits blur the lines between science, interactive art and sculpture. Topics include robotics, magnetism, motion and forces, sound, light and simple machines. SEE is also home to the award winning LEGO Millyard Project, a model of the Amoskeag millyard circa 1900, made entirely of LEGO bricks. The largest of its kind in the world, the Millyard LEGO Project includes running water in the river and canals, trains, the Pandora Mill, Notre Dame Bridge and more than 6,000 LEGO mini figures in scenes throughout the project. E.W. Poore Framing, Inc. (775 Canal Street): Come into E.W. Poore Framing to celebrate summer with us through artworks by local artist. Come and see what Zentangle is all about, let Diane Lachance show you a tangle, and help us tangle a trolley image; we need all your help! Our summer classes are in progress as well; come check them out.
Art 3 Gallery (44 West Brook Street): Art 3 Gallery presents “Surf and Turf” on display from July 20 to September 25. Lobster or steak? Kayak or bike? Ocean or mountain? Summer days bring along a multitude of ways for us to spend this vacation loaded season. “Surf and Turf” is a refreshing look at our favorite summer pastimes and images. The artwork in this show features some literal images of flora, fauna and fish. Other artists have created a mood using a palette that evokes the lazy, hazy days of summer. Over 70 artists have the gallery exploding with summer images!
Manchester Artists Assoc. Carol Rines Center (1528 Elm Street): Manchester Artists Association and Granite State Arts Market are having a Pop Up Show at the Carol Rines Gallery, 1528 Elm St. for Open Doors Trolley Night. Members of the Manchester Artists Assoc. will be exhibiting original art in several media and will also have matted prints and cards for sale. Refreshments served. The MAA will also be presenting the Annual Art Scholarship to winner during Open Doors.
The Granite State Arts Market is also excited to announce that they are now producing an arts market in downtown Manchester in conjunction with this summer’s Intown Manchester outdoor music and movie series in Veteran’s Park. The market will feature hand crafts and fine art and will be held from 6pm to sundown on Thursday evenings before the Downtown concert series.

NH Institute of Art (77 Amherst Street Gallery): New Hampshire Institute of Art strives to engage students, artists, scholars, and the community in the arts through quality education, outreach, and access to creative resources, with a focus on the present and a vision on the future. Stop in to see what students and faculty have been working on!
Studioverne (81 Hanover Street, Odd Fellows Building): Studioverne is a fine art fused glass studio located directly across the street from the Palace Theatre on Hanover Street. This location is Verne’s working studio, where viewers are welcome to visit and see her art in progress as well as purchase. Verne’s current work has been described as “being invited inside an aquarium!” The black box frames, with three colorful transparent fused glass panels are textural and dimensional underwater scenes. Stop by for a “Summer Sale” on July 23rd, trolley night. Fused Glass studies and samples will be on display for one night only special purchase prices.
GREGORVIOS Graphic Design Studio (83 Hanover Street, Odd Fellows Building): Founded in 2011, GREGORVIOS Graphic Design Studio is a branding and design studio that focuses on developing print and digital media content for a variety of clients.
Art on the Wall at City Hall (One City Hall Plaza): The City Hall gallery is proud to announce the 10th Annual City of Manchester Employee Art Show. The National Arts Program (NAP) was created for the encouragement and development of artistic talent. There are over 99 artists participating this year. Reception will be on the 1st floor from 4-5pm with the awards ceremony starting at 5pm in the Aldermanic chambers. The artwork is available to view until the end of August.
Dancing Lion Chocolates (917 Elm Street): Dancing Lion is a renowned chocolate shop that features products that not only taste amazing, but are a work of art as well! Stop by to see their beautiful creations.
Studio 550 (550 Elm Street): Studio 550 is an art studio for people of all ages and backgrounds who do not know they are artists yet. The Studio will have a table open for kids (and adults) to play with clay for the duration of the evening. In the gallery we are exhibiting functional ceramics from around the country, locally made jewelry and knitted items, and showcasing ceramics that incorporate the printmaking process. There will be drumming, dance, drawing, and pottery classes in progress that visitors will be able to observe.
