Bedford Town Councilor Jim Scanlon has submitted the following in memoriam of Kathy Benuck who was laid to rest today. Scanlon and Benuck were known to clash from time to time on various issues affecting the town. That Scanlon has penned this eloquent tribute is testimony not just to Benuck’s character, but to his own. We are pleased to have the opportunity to publish this letter to a fallen friend.
Requiem for a Heavyweight
In the weeks before her passing, her small frame became yet smaller. Try as it might though, her illness could not best her. She remained constant, as she had all her life, a heavyweight champion in class, character and courage. Her public persona was widely recognized and will be remembered by many, but the private was reserved for a smaller group of friends and family. I am grateful that our paths crossed and in their circuitous travel, brought us to similar ground on which we were later able to forge a strong friendship.

Kathy Benuck may be best known for her sharp-witted, discerning, sometimes critical, blogs on the Bedford Patch. Or you may have watched her on BCTV’s “Tell It Like It Is” investigative segment, or perhaps seen her in one of the 100 plus interviews she conducted with politicians, professionals and colorful members of the Bedford community. A prolific writer who demonstrated well the power of the pen, she continuously challenged as well as championed various causes and people.
“The world will little note nor long remember” many of us in this world, but the words she so carefully crafted and the sentiments she evoked in us will stay with us for years to come. I will remember her as a singular model of courage and compassion and commitment to judiciousness that hopefully will continue to inspire others even in her absence. May God bless my friend and grant her a safe haven.
