Memorial High School Hosts Hair Drive in Honor of Graduate Battling Leukemia

WHAT: Pantene Beautiful Lengths (PBL) hair drive to benefit women and children suffering from cancer treatment.
WHEN: Friday, May 30th
Open to students: A – H period (7:45 am – 2:45 pm)
Open to the public: 3 – 5 pm
WHERE: Manchester Memorial High School, Arthur J. Mirable Auditorium
Moran: “Hair a Thon” in her name.
WHY: Jessica Moran, an MMHS graduate of 2007, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in February, only a week before her 25th birthday. Jessica was a very active student and well-liked by her peers and the MHS faculty. She was a member of DECA and competed at DECA nationals; she was a four-year varsity cheerleader/co-captain and a Crusader Award and Mayor’s Award recipient; she was class treasurer and even the prom queen. Jess was a ray of sunshine at MMHS and she continues to shine today.
After graduating from the University of Tampa, Jess moved home to Manchester and worked for local advertising agency, Griffin York & Krause. She now lives in Boston and works for the TJX Companies in Framingham, MA doing marketing for TJMaxx. Since her diagnosis, she has been unable to work and decided to use her knowledge of social media to chronicle her story on a personal blog called the Inspiration Initiative. (www.inspirationinitiative.com). To date, the blog has received over 30,000 views as she continues to inspire people with her message of hope and determination.
After having long, brown hair her whole life, one of the hardest parts in her journey thus far has been losing her hair. It has taken an emotional toll on Jess and after expressing these feelings through her blog, it inspired students at MMHS to get involved. The Memorial students would like to honor Jess through this hair drive and show her that she is not alone in her fight against cancer.
HOW: Through the help of Arcaydia Salon and Day Spa and the MST cosmetology students, ladies and gentlemen can donate 8” (minimum) of their hair to contribute to the making of a wig. Students will sign up in the cafeteria to attend the drive during a free period of the day. The public is welcome in the building after 2:45 (no sign-up necessary).
***Hair must be clean on the day of the cut, and it must be free of bleach, permanent dyes, and/or an abundance of grey.***
FUN: Panera Bread breakfast, Puritan Backroom Chicken, homemade baked goods, haircuts, raffle baskets and gift cards, custom designed t-shirts, before-and-after digital photo booth, a kids’ craft corner and face painting, decorations, music, and lots of great company!
