Controversy is raging inside the walls of Highland Goffe’s Falls School. Victoria Sullivan explained how the H.G.F. Principal shut down the traditional annual Field Day celebration. The PTA has been threatened with termination because they’ve tried hard to get the principal to reconsider.
“”The PTA doesn’t exist just to raise money. There is a very big problem with the schools and the thinking within them. Parents have a voice!”
If I were a parent in this city, I would feel like the school was only interested in my contribution if it was financial. And I would NEVER stand for that, either. The job of the parents is to confront the need for change when they feel it is necessary. The job of the Administrator is to defend his test scores to the state. If an increase in refugees that do not speak English explains the drop in scores, the student body as a whole should not be punished. Even the individual students contributing to the problem did not set out to intentionally ruin the scores. The situation is what it is. Be a grown up, and establish new goals to alleviate the problem next year, but give the kids their field trip this year!! And if you decide NOT to hold Field Day next year or any other year, be proactive. People with real power recognize they have a responsibility to those they serve. Ego maniacs don’t feel like they owe anyone an explanation……
